What are dental implants?

Modern dentistry, in which Corby Private Medical Centre specializes, offers patients a range of innovative solutions that allow them to regain the former functionality of their teeth and the natural beauty of their smile. This includes cases of numerous missing teeth, or even complete edentulism. One such procedure is the implantation of dental implants. These are small, generally less than 2 centimeters long and a few millimeters in diameter, screw-shaped fixtures that replace the natural root of a lost tooth. They are placed in the jawbone or mandible and serve as a support for prosthetic works, including crowns and bridges. Thanks to the biocompatibility of the material from which the implants are made – usually titanium or zirconia – they are very well accepted by the body and eventually integrate with the bone.

We know perfectly well that beautiful and healthy teeth allow our patients to share their joy with loved ones without any limitations, and moreover, they make them look well-groomed and full of energy. The loss of even one tooth often has serious consequences. This is not only about the disruption of the smile’s aesthetics but also health complications, such as loosening of adjacent teeth or the development of dysfunctions in the chewing apparatus. Therefore, with the health and comfort of our patients in mind, we provide comprehensive implant-prosthetic treatment.

What distinguishes dental implants?

Discretion and aesthetics of execution. The implants placed at Corby Private Medical Centre remain invisible, allowing for highly satisfactory aesthetic results after completing the implant-prosthetic treatment.

Ease of use.

Fixed restorations, including those placed on implants, unlike removable dentures, do not require the patient to get used to their presence. The treated person does not need to maintain them in any special way – daily oral hygiene is sufficient.

Functionality. Thanks to implant treatment, the patient can regain the former functionality of their teeth. Chewing food will no longer be a problem, and issues related to unclear speech, caused by missing teeth or the use of traditional removable dentures, will disappear.

Durability. The use of materials as resistant to damage as titanium or zirconia ensures that implants can serve patients reliably for decades, or even a lifetime. Of course, maintaining oral health with regular check-ups is essential in this regard.

In which cases is it worth considering dental implants?

Treatment with dental implants is recommended for patients who have experienced the loss of natural teeth – this applies to both single gaps in the dental arch and complete edentulism. The reasons for tooth loss vary significantly. Gaps can be the result of mechanical injuries, extractions, untreated cavities, or periodontal disease. Essential conditions for implant placement include the completed development of the bones and the patient’s oral health. The patient must also not suffer from severe chronic diseases, such as cancer, uncontrolled diabetes, or diseases that lower the immune system. Moreover, implant treatment is generally not started in cases of pregnancy, drug or alcohol addiction, or blood clotting disorders.

Why is filling gaps so important?

If a missing tooth is not restored, the surrounding tissues, including bone tissue, begin to deteriorate. This results in the gradual displacement of the adjacent teeth – the movement of one tooth negatively affects the others. This dangerous chain reaction poses the risk of significant bite defects, the development of periodontitis, and even the loss of additional teeth. The patient may experience serious problems with biting and chewing food, as well as with clear speech. Moreover, unaddressed gaps can lead to troublesome pain and reduce the overall facial aesthetics. Therefore, it is clear why it is so important to act quickly and decisively when gaps in the teeth occur.

What does implant treatment involve and how does it proceed?

The course of implant treatment can be outlined as follows:

  • Performing the necessary diagnostic tests
  • Planning the treatment
  • Implanting the implant at the site of the missing tooth
  • The period of regeneration and integration of the implant with the bone
  • Placing the healing screw instead of the closure screw
  • Taking impressions of the patient’s teeth and preparing the prosthetic restoration
  • Attaching the prosthetic work to the implant

Implant placement at the site of the lost tooth is a procedure that requires proper preparation and exceptional precision. For this reason, the patient visiting Corby Private Medical Centre first undergoes diagnostic tests to carefully plan the treatment and rule out any contraindications. The key role here is played by the clinical examination and imaging diagnostics (including X-rays and CT scans). The implant-prosthetic treatment itself can be divided into surgical and prosthetic parts, although in some cases, doctors and patients opt for one-stage treatment.

During the surgical part, the dental surgeon drills a hole in the patient’s bone, where the implant is then placed, and after ensuring that the procedure was successful, the wound is sutured. Thanks to effective and safe anesthesia, the procedure is completely painless for the patient, who can return to daily activities the day after the clinic visit. After successful implant placement, the healing phase begins, usually lasting from one and a half to three months.

The patient can proceed to the prosthetic treatment phase after the implant has fully integrated with the bone. After uncovering the implant and fitting the healing screw, the final abutment is placed, followed by the prosthetic crown or bridge. Before creating the restoration in the lab, impressions of the teeth are taken. This aims to faithfully reproduce the patient’s individual bite conditions. The prosthetic restoration placed on the implant perfectly mimics the patient’s natural tooth in both shape and enamel color. The solid foundation of the artificial tooth in the form of a titanium or zirconia screw ensures its complete stability and functionality.

Choose dental implants at Corby Private Medical Centre

Our implantologists are here to help all patients, regardless of the extent of the missing teeth and the cause of their loss. The implants we offer can significantly improve the patient’s quality of life in cases of:

  • A single missing tooth in the dental arch. Although the loss of one tooth is often overlooked by the patient (especially when it comes to a premolar or molar), it should be remembered that it can lead to very serious health consequences. Moreover, opting out of restoring one tooth can result in the need for much more complex and expensive treatment in the future, which may include guided bone regeneration or sinus lift.
  • Loss of several teeth. Implant treatment allows patients to regain the former beauty of their smile and the functionality of the chewing apparatus even in the case of extensive tooth loss. If at least three adjacent teeth are missing, the patient can choose to restore them using a bridge. This type of prosthetic work requires the placement of two implants to support the bridge (anchored crowns) and the crowns forming its spans. This solution is often chosen by patients due to the lower cost of treatment compared to restoring each tooth with a crown on an implant.
  • Complete edentulism. Modern alternatives to traditional removable full dentures include implant-supported dentures. They offer much greater stability in the mouth, increased durability, and a much higher level of visual aesthetics. Patients who opt for this comprehensive solution often highlight the ease of speaking and eating, as well as the lack of maintenance problems associated with the prosthetic work.

Frequently asked questions about implant treatment

  • How are dental implants better than traditional dentures?

Implants and the prosthetic restorations mounted on them are the closest replication of the patient’s natural, lost teeth. Moreover, artificial roots are stable, durable, and highly aesthetically made. Thanks to full biocompatibility, they integrate perfectly with the bone. It is also worth noting that in many cases, they provide a reliable solution for life.

  • Is using implants convenient?

The dental implants placed at Corby Private Medical Centre are characterized by complete stability and the absence of moving parts. This means, in practice, that they do not cause abrasions or pain, and do not create problems with chewing food, even hard ones. Full comfort of use is therefore another of their numerous advantages.

  • Is implant placement painful?

The anesthesia used in our clinic makes the implant placement procedure completely painless for the patient. However, some discomfort may accompany the treated person for a few days after successful implantation. In most cases, they quickly subside. If necessary, the patient can take popular, over-the-counter anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving medications. To prevent infection and speed up the healing process, the dentist may also recommend antibiotic therapy.

  • How long does it take to place implants?

Placing one dental implant takes an average of 15 to 30 minutes. If there is a need to restore more extensive gaps, i.e., place several implants, this time may be correspondingly longer.

  • What to do after implant placement?

There are several important recommendations for patients after implantation. For two days after the clinic visit, they should avoid hot food and choose liquid or semi-liquid food. Smoking, drinking alcohol, and carbonated drinks are also not recommended for the first 48 hours. To reduce swelling after the procedure, the patient can apply cold compresses. It is important not to chew food at the implant site until the wound has healed, and not to touch the implant area. It is also advisable to refrain from intense physical activity for two weeks after implant placement.

  • When is implant treatment not recommended?

The dynamic development of dentistry and implantology means that more and more patients can opt for this form of tooth restoration. However, certain contraindications to implant placement should be remembered. These include too young age and pregnancy, as well as serious diseases such as cancer, AIDS, or advanced diabetes. We must also inform the implantologist before starting treatment if we suffer from osteoporosis, epilepsy, blood clotting disorders, or addictions – including drugs, medications, or alcohol. Of course, the patient’s health in the oral area, bite conditions, and jaw and mandible bone density are also of key importance.

  • What is the risk of the body rejecting the implant?

Very small. Sources report that implant treatment is successful in 98 out of 100 cases! However, it is worth noting that there are risk factors that negatively affect treatment outcomes – these include neglecting oral hygiene, poor bone condition, or smoking.

  • How to care for dental implants?

We should care for implants and the prosthetic works on them as we do for natural teeth. Therefore, maintaining their functionality and aesthetic appearance requires proper oral hygiene (daily tooth brushing, cleaning the spaces between them with dental floss, and rinsing the mouth), regular check-ups at the dental office, and preventive treatments, including scaling and sandblasting.
